Mushrooms

November 23, 2025

Did I need a deep plunge into a new blog site, right when such a time-consuming challenge really didn’t fit into my crowded calendar? The answer, no surprise, is “no” but at least I was able to navigate the mind-befuddling process of transferring the data from my old platform to this new, AI-enhanced version of good ol’ WordPress. My previous experience of working on good ol’ WordPress wasn’t stellar, so I’m hoping to improve my relationship with it asap. So far I have been able to upload my seasonally appropriate squash painting! But now, HOW do I get rid of “Hello World!” which was placed there by Good Ol. I’m not sure about this, but I think Good Ol’s default tips will stay on this, my First Post until I figure out how to discretely remove them without being told “This is not a good idea.” At least I got my squash up on this new site for your viewing pleasure! Happy Thanksgiving :-).

Live shrooms
Soon,
on this site that is supposed to be mainly about lettering and illustration, I'll get back to displaying these things! But bear with me a little longer, as I continue to play and design for my son Eli's and Amy's wedding. I just cannot help myself.

This morning I crouched under a cedar tree in the corner of my back yard, and photographed these vigorous mushrooms. I love surprises in the garden. Mushrooms are always a surprise.

It so happens that I have a large supply of freshly made marzipan in my fridge. Why? Because I am doing what I did for my own wedding cake 33 years ago. I am making marzipan vegetables and fruits to decorate the young couple's wedding cake. The appearance of the natural mushrooms inspired me to pull out the untinted ball of marzipan and the red marzipan and go to work on creating some little edible fungi. These will join the pumpkins, corn, peppers, tomatoes and potatoes, and lettuces that are ready to be placed on the cake. It will look like Saturday morning at the Pike Place Market when it's all done.

Marzipan shroomsAbove is my finished little mushroom forest. In the foreground are the ones modeled on the real specimens in my yard. The stems are a little stout because the slim ones I first made drooped sadly. Eli, a long-time 'shroom hunter, will enjoy having fungi on his cake rather than white roses. Especially when the 'shrooms are completely edible.

Marzipan amanitas! What a lovely idea! Three dimensions can be so much fun.

Oh! These little mushrooms are so cute! You’ll have to give me a class on marzipan making sometime. Hey, maybe you could do a step-by-step like Molly did with her painting on her website!
Make sure you show a photo of the finished product–the whole cake!

I absolutely love the idea of all the marzipan foods on the cake. You MUST show us a picture of the finished product along with all of the decorations. What a joyful time ahead for you and your family.
