Now: 27 Daily Eggs
November 23, 2025
Did I need a deep plunge into a new blog site, right when such a time-consuming challenge really didn’t fit into my crowded calendar? The answer, no surprise, is “no” but at least I was able to navigate the mind-befuddling process of transferring the data from my old platform to this new, AI-enhanced version of good ol’ WordPress. My previous experience of working on good ol’ WordPress wasn’t stellar, so I’m hoping to improve my relationship with it asap. So far I have been able to upload my seasonally appropriate squash painting! But now, HOW do I get rid of “Hello World!” which was placed there by Good Ol. I’m not sure about this, but I think Good Ol’s default tips will stay on this, my First Post until I figure out how to discretely remove them without being told “This is not a good idea.” At least I got my squash up on this new site for your viewing pleasure! Happy Thanksgiving :-).
I have to brag about little Bess, the Barred Rock(er), who has laid 27 daily eggs with no day off. She's my advent chicken; each day in December I've lifted the lid to the nest box, and there's been the perfect little pink/tan egg. Why is this unusual? It's rare for any chicken to lay…

…and the realtor is my big sister! Kath asked for help designing a card to send to her list and to give to colleagues. She has always liked my travel sketches, and she liked the suggestion of making a bookmark in place of a standard card. The travel sketch she selected for the bookmark card…

Ever since I ate my first pomegranate as a child, I have loved them. I loved them so much then that when I picked blackberries in the summer, I'd take the biggest one I could find and pluck each black lobe off the berry one-by-one, pretending that the berry was a pomegranate. Now, one of…

Edgefield, a former poor farm and nursing home, has been in business for 20 active years as a hotel. The gardens seen in the foreground provide vegetables and herbs for the restaurant. Trees and shrubs with changing leaves puncuate the beautiful grounds. We were there during the time of the grape crush for this year's…

The handsome birds in this photo have been raised by my son and daughter-in-law on their 10-acre farm in Castle Rock. How convenient for my drawing group that I happened to have good reference material for a Thanksgiving-themed drawing project. It was delightful to see how we each interpreted, with pencil on paper, the proudly…

It's been a while since I posted photos of my little flock of three. They are thriving! They do remain eggless, but they are nonetheless loved. I thought you'd enjoy seeing them as they look today, with some "before" pictures posted for contrast. Above is Cinnamon at 8 days of age. On the right,…

To take an autumn trip to Vermont is an all-American must for many of us. To see the spectrum of color on the hillsides, to wind around the country roads, to stop at an apple stand by the Grandma Moses-perfect orchard…one cannot forget the pleasures of a visit. When I went to Vermont with a…

I've always loved the spring, but in recent years I've grown increasingly fond of the autumn. It helps to have Seattle flooded with sunshine this week, so that the unique and subtle colors of the season are illuminated; this, as most people know, is not the norm up here in the northwest corner. In honor…

Perhaps it was seeing all of the beautiful organic apples available at every turn in our state, or perhaps it was the fine autumn weather here in Seattle that made it an urgent matter to bake apple pies. For lunch guests this week I baked the first one, and then, still obeying the urge to…
