  • How my Blouse Inspired a Painting

    November 23, 2025

Did I need a deep plunge into a new blog site, right when such a time-consuming challenge really didn’t fit into my crowded calendar? The answer, no surprise, is “no” but at least I was able to navigate the mind-befuddling process of transferring the data from my old platform to this new, AI-enhanced version of good ol’ WordPress. My previous experience of working on good ol’ WordPress wasn’t stellar, so I’m hoping to improve my relationship with it asap. So far I have been able to upload my seasonally appropriate squash painting! But now, HOW do I get rid of “Hello World!” which was placed there by Good Ol. I’m not sure about this, but I think Good Ol’s default tips will stay on this, my First Post until I figure out how to discretely remove them without being told “This is not a good idea.” At least I got my squash up on this new site for your viewing pleasure! Happy Thanksgiving :-).

There's a first time for everything, and this first-time project was fun.  Here's my blouse and this is how this project got started: I wore this to go visit my sister-in-law at her new home in Fircrest, WA. She loved my blouse, and said so! The reason for our visit was to help select light fixtures for her…

On Tuesday morning, our little drawing group settled in the garden of one of our members. It's spectacular there what with the many verdant areas featuring a wide variety of plants, trees, water features and clipped lawn paths. We picked our chosen spots in this wonderland, and met up 40 or so minutes later to…

Soon to appear on a Mack truck doing short to medium hauling in Washington and Oregon is this logo I designed for a long-time client. He is a unique man, and the only person I've ever known to have simultaneous careers as a commercial airline pilot and a medical doctor. What was next on his bucket…

On a few occasions I have been told emphatically by students and colleagues that Prang watercolors, an elementary school staple, are lightfast except for the yellow (according to one professional user). I have nothing against Prang paints, and for $10 they are, in my view, a bargain for the 16 color set. For youth classes…

The three of us itching to have a little adventure, we decided to ride the rails to Vancouver, BC in May. There was no shortage of points of interests on our lists: we visited the Vancouver Art Gallery, Stanley Park, Granville Island, and the Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden before walking from there back to…

The Drawing Group has been convening for 5.5 years now. It's not uncommon for us to look at each other over fresh coffee and breakfast pastry and say, "What shall we draw?" One day last month while my granddaughter was visiting, a collection of her stuffed animals was on a chair at the table. Voilà:…

Today for the drawing group subject I sprinkled my acorn collection on the dining room table. We pulled out our watercolors and pens and with no initial pencil drawing first, we lit into our paints and each captured, in our individual ways, the little darlings of autumn. "Working loosely," which was our aim, is easier…

My wedding was in 1975. What does this have to do with my first calligraphy commission? As a then-employee of the University Bookstore in Seattle, I fell into possession of an unneeded Speedball lettering booklet in Spanish. I copied the Italic style of calligraphy in that booklet and soon deemed myself qualified to do the…

I can tell when I've come through a busy period. How? By gasping when I see how long it's been since I posted things on this site and on my professional site. It's true: "the holidays" keep most of us pretty well tied up with seasonal activities, projects and traditions. After the rush & hubbub…

It is the Yuletide season, and my preference would be to be applying myself to making gifts and cards and maybe even fruitcake. But the fact is: I have a big project I'm pushing to complete. Yesterday it occurred to me that I haven't posted anything here since I painted my pomegranate over a month…
